Plantation drive
|2022
Arumbakkam, a small village located behind the Poondi reservoir in Thiruvallore, is home to 26 Irular and tribal families living on the banks of Poondi Lake. These families face caste-based restrictions, where they are only permitted to fish in the lake but are barred from selling their catch in the regular markets, where pricing is standardized. Arumbakkam's isolation and the caste-based restrictions severely limit the economic opportunities for its residents, making the plantation drive an essential step towards financial resilience. To provide a sustainable second source of income, a fruit-bearing tree plantation drive has been initiated for the community. The next phase of support focuses on building a playground for the village children and arranging regular transport to help students attend school in the neighboring village.
